Dry vs Dehydrated Skin: Signs, Causes and Treatment

There is a big difference between dry and dehydrated skin. Though in both the cases you will feel dry. You know what, the former is the skin type while the latter is the skin concern. 


What's confusing is to know whether your skin is dry or dehydrated. Since they share some symptoms like discomfort, peeling, tight feeling, it's easy to confuse them and make wrong assumption. This leads to using wrong products and one may end up with new problems. You could have been treating your dehydrated skin as dry skin your whole life, not even knowing it. But there's a difference. Dry skin is a skin type you are born with and the other is a skin condition that can be changed by various factors.


Dry skin vs Dehydrated skin:

Dry skin has a lack of oil, or lipids. You can feel it everywhere else on your body including hands, legs, and scalp too. You were born this way. When, with dehydrated skin there's lack of water in the top layer of the skin. What's true about this that all skin types can experience the lack of water, even an oily skin.

Signs of dry skin:

  • Scaly skin
  • White flakes
  • Pores appear smaller
  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Rough feeling
  • Having visible blackheads and breakouts.

Signs of dehydrated skin:

  • Looks dull
  • Feels tight
  • Becomes sensitive
  • Itchiness
  • Dullness
  • Darker under eye circles
  • Having large or medium pores
  • Increased appearance of fine lines and surface wrinkles.

Causes of dry and dehydrated skin:

The causes of dry skin maybe cold weather, long hot shower, using too harsh soaps or alcohol based products regularly.

When dehydrated skin is caused by

  • Sun exposure (esp to UVA in sunlight)
  • Air pollution
  • Air conditioning
  • Heating
  • Hormonal changes
  • Stress
  • Wrong diet
  • Wrong or no skincare routine
  • Too much alcohol or caffeine
